When a person develops back issues, he or she should ensure that the posture of the spine in maintained and should keep a constant tab on the way he or she stands walks or sits. There are a few important pointers which help in maintaining body shape and posture for a trouble free spine:
•It should be ensured that the mattress on which one sleeps is firm, it may not necessarily be hard but should be comfortably firm. The pillow used while sleeping should be considerably flat and a fuller pillow should be placed under the knees. This helps the spine relax in its natural shape.
•High heels should be avoided as they increase the chances of lumbar lordosis and throw the spine out of balance.
•Activities such as rigorous dance moves or strenuous aerobics, jogging, running or anything that puts high physical strain on the body. It is beneficial to carry out activities that go easy on the body.
When the pain in the back is extremely high and the patient is not able to sit or stand comfortably then it is advisable that the person lies down and takes anti-inflammatory or analgesic medication as prescribed by the doctor. These exercises should be practiced after the person is comfortable in his or her routine activities.
All these asana when practiced, help in healing and curing muscle pains and spasms. The yoga postures help in giving mild traction to the spine gently stretching the spinal muscles in extension postures that are safe for the spine. The muscles around the spine and buttocks and the abdominal organs gradually become stronger and toned and pressure points on the spine are stimulated when these exercise techniques are practiced. These asana should be done only to the point when a feeling of mild pain is experienced.
