Taking Back Pain In Your Stride

Summary:

Back pain is a problem that is prevalent the world over. While it may be tolerable at times, it can also become debilitating at times interfering with activities of daily living. Sitting for prolonged periods of time or going on long drives may become virtually impossible. There are a number of treatment options for back pain relief. However, it will depend on the individual case and the severity of the condition.

Back pain does not affect just the elderly patients, but it also affects the younger adults as well. Lifestyles have changed over the years and people hardly get enough physical activity throughout the day. Most of us spend a long period of time sitting at our work desk or driving long distances. Back pain is generally caused due to improper lifting of heavy objects such as furniture at home or garden furniture etc. Doing heavy workouts at the gym can also cause back pain. These are activities that put a lot of pressure on your back and this can lead to low back injuries like muscle strain and this may cause spasm. Back pain could also be caused due to a tear in the ligaments, slipped disc, or due to joint problems.

The pain may sometimes be tolerable, but it may also increase and become unbearable at times. The physician will thoroughly evaluate the situation and arrive at the root of the problem. It is important to find the actual cause before seeking medical intervention for back pain relief.

A disc herniation occurs when the disk between the bones in the vertebral column bulges and puts pressure on the nerves. This is generally caused due to twisting while lifting heavy objects. A person with a slipped disc might find it difficult to do simple tasks such as bending and sitting. If the injury is very severe, the person may avoid any type of movement that causes the pain. Many people are not aware of what caused the slipped disc in the first place. However, it will come as a relief to know that this will not necessarily lead to paralysis and there are many treatment options for back pain relief.

The treatment options for a slipped disk could be surgical or non-surgical. Both options have their share of risks and benefits and it is essential that you have a frank discussion with your doctor. Most doctors will suggest trying the non-surgical options first and if all else fails then surgery would be the last option. Some of the natural methods would include ample bed rest, maintaining proper posture while standing, sitting, lying down, walking, as well as regular exercise.

Sleep to your side with knees bent. You may use a pillow between your knees as well. Try to sleep on a firm mattress and put pillows under your knees. Another way to take pressure off your back is by lying down on the floor and keeping knees bent and resting the feet on a chair. This helps in taking the pressure off the back as well.
