In order to get a better understanding of back pain and before finding back ache remedies, it is important to take a look at the anatomy of the human back. Our entire body is supported by the skeletal structure and the back is supported by the vertebrae. The entire spinal column consists of 24 vertebrae that include 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 in the thoracic region, and 5 in the lumbar region or lower back. There are 5 fused vertebrae in the sacrum, which is situated just below the lumbar vertebrae. The coccyx is also known as the tailbone and it has 3 to 5 fused vertebrae that lie beneath the sacrum. There are spongy discs which are present between the vertebrae. The entire spinal column is tightly surrounded by ligaments and muscles. The bones and muscles are held together by the tendons and ligaments. There is a vertebral canal that is formed by the natural alignment of the vertebrae. The spinal cord passes through the vertebral canal.
