Will Surgery Help My Back Pain?

Summary:

This article gives you a lowdown whether or not having a surgery will give you back pain relief.

Back pain is a common health issue among people around the world. It is a fact that back pain is one of the top three complaints that doctors all over the world receive. Some common causes of back pain include inflammation of soft back tissues, spasms in back muscles, or degenerative arthritis. These sorts of back problems respond well to conventional treatment such as anti-inflammatory medicines, stretches and simple exercises, osteopathic manipulative therapy, hot and cold compresses, massages and acupuncture treatments. However, there are other serious issues that require higher level of medical attention and it is important to identify such issues at an early stage. Some of the symptoms of serious back problems include any loss of bowel or bladder control.
The more prolonged the bowel and bladder issue remains the worst the back problem becomes, hence it is important that when one starts experiencing any such problem, immediate advice of a doctor should be taken in order to take emergency remedial measures. Apart from affecting the bladder, this sort of a problem may affect the legs and may weaken the muscles of the legs to such an extent that the person may find difficulty in walking which in turn may lead to falls and fractures.
As opposed to contrary belief, the back problem can be diagnosed easily through a thorough profiling of the medical history, neurological and structural exams, basic x-ray reports of the spine etc. and these results are able to give an efficiency of almost 80 – 90% in the diagnosis. MRI scans also help in examining the cross sectional view of the spine for any structural issues but most of the times the type of treatment administered remains the same. MRI scan is more beneficial for those who are likely to undergo a surgery for the back problem. The MRI becomes inevitable if there is no improvement in the condition even after regular treatment and if the pain worsens over time.
Apart from the common causes of low back pain which include muscle spasms, degenerative discs and osteoarthritis some chronic structural imbalances also play a major role in causing back issues. Some of the chronic structural imbalances include wear and tear to the spine resulting from and old injury or sports and obesity. These problems cause the spinal discs to lose their cushioning ability and they may begin to bulge or protrude on the outside.
As people grow old they start experiencing change in the shape of the spine. This phenomenon occurs mostly after people reach the age of 50 years. However, this does not mean that everyone experiences pain in the back region. Surgery is most effective only in those cases where a nerve root attached to the spinal cord gets pressurized or if the spinal cord itself is getting affected in any physical way. Radiating pain in the leg known as sciatica can also be treated through external methods such as the osteopathic manipulation therapy which helps in relieving the symptoms of numbness and tingling in the legs.
As a conclusion many researches and studies show that people who undergo surgery experience almost the same sort of results that people without surgery experience, 5 years after the surgery is carried out. Hence it is better to be sure of the need for surgery before opting for one.
